Today was very different, but in a boring way. So I'll be trying to explain those differences instead of focusing on the boring facts. Are you excited, Diary?
See, for the first time I found all the park restrooms closed. No, strictly the second - the first was a few days ago, but fixed by Ravenna Park's opening that afternoon. Nor did I literally check all the parks; I mean here the chain north of 45th St - Burke-Gilman Playground Park, Ravenna Park, Cowen Park and University Playground, and I took the latter two on faith. But Ravenna Park's rooms were still locked at 9 AM today, and Burke-Gilman's at 9:45. I even got pictures! Look:
So of course I shifted the burden to private companies again, this time bolstered by the statements of a neighbour walking his dog, who said the parks were running on half their usual staff.
Now if you're trying to save staff time by opening fewer restrooms, regional is the only sensible way to do it. But from the point of view of a homeless person trying to follow Mayor Durkan's instructions, it looks rather creepy. Are we just supposed to skip eating and drinking on days our neighbourhoods' park restrooms won't open? Maybe fasting is a great way to boost immunity! But how can we do this when we don't know which weeks we're out of luck?
Or maybe the closed restrooms are being penalised for not transitioning enough of their users into stable housing?
Or maybe the reason the restrooms get closed at all - surely expensive - is that each is occupied at night by a spiritually high-powered hermit, praying for the city, and in the current crisis they need more time to work?
Or maybe it's because exercise is good for us, and we really are all meant to trek to Magnuson Park day after day, socially distanced, of course.
Beats me, Diary. I have to assume that the decision makers really do have our best interests at heart, and just move in mysterious ways, their wonders to perform.
